ADMINISTRATIVE ARRAGEMENT

Background

The Indonesia-Australia Business Summit (IABS) is an annual event hosted by the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra in collaboration with all Consulates General of the Republic of Indonesia in Australia, the Indonesian Investment Promotion Centre in Sydney and the Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre in Sydney as well Australian business organizations such as Indonesia Australia Business Council (IABC). IABS 2019 is the sixth event that will take place in Sydney after successfully being held in Canberra (2 times), Perth, and Adelaide. The 2016 IABS in Perth attracted around 400 participants from Indonesia and Australia, while the 2017 IABS in Adelaide and the IABS 2018 in Melbourne were attended by more than 300 participants.

The aim of IABS 2019 is to deliberate new business opportunities and partnerships as well as explore possible and potential collaboration on certain sectors such as automotive, vocational education and training, as well as infrastructure in the development of tourism and special economic zones. IABS 2019is inviting Indonesian and Australian businesses such as members of the Indonesian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Australian CEOs, Ministers, anda number of Indonesian regional government leaders to exchange ideas and information for potential future cooperation.

On 4 March 2019, the Indonesian Minister of Trade and the Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment signed the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA CEPA). IA CEPA is the next step in advancing economic cooperation and people connectivity after the conclusion of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) by President Joko Widodo and Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Bogor in August 2018.

IA CEPA not only opens markets and eliminate barriers to trade between Indonesia and Australia, but also establishes an equal and mutually beneficial and long-term partnership for trade and investment, education, training, and joint efforts to enhance people-to-people connection. IA CEPA allows Indonesian products to enter Australia at 0% tariff and over 99% of Australian goods to be exported by value to Indonesia duty free or under significantly improved preferential arrangements by 2020. Indonesia will also be able to gain market access in services through the raised quota for working holiday visas from its initial 1000 to 4100 within the first year of implementation, and raised 5% in its subsequent years to reach 5000 visas.

IA CEPA has garnered support from industries both in Indonesia and Australia. The Governments of Indonesia and Australia are also working together in disseminating information on IA CEPA to prospective industries. Currently, the Governments of Indonesia and Australia are working on their respective ratification processes of IA CEPA for its entry into force and implementation.
